Similar to the Lemosho route, the Shira Route commences at 3,600 meters, making it less suitable for novice high-altitude trekkers. Beginning at Shira Gate, it merges with the Lemosho Route on day two at Shira Camp 2. However, the high starting point poses challenges, with many experiencing altitude sickness from the onset.
The path traverses the Shira Plateau with various route options. After Shira Camp 2, it merges with the Machame Route via Lava Tower, descending to Barranco Camp via the Southern Circuit. The ascent to Uhuru Peak is via Barafu Camp and the southern slopes of Kibo.
With fewer trekkers, the initial days offer a less crowded experience compared to other routes.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be transferred for overnight accommodation at a Hotel, 4 stars B&B. Your head guide will meet you for your briefing, gear check, and equipment rental arrangements.
Take on a 3-hour drive from Moshi to the trailhead. Trek through the rainforest, navigating winding trails to Shira Camp 2, encountering muddy and slippery terrain at lower elevations.
From Shira Plateau, ascend towards Lava Tower, also known as the “Shark’s Tooth” (elev 4650m/15,250ft). Descend to Barranco Camp, crucial for acclimatization despite ending the day at a similar elevation.
Ascend the steep ridge of Barranco Wall to Karanga Valley, connecting with the Mweka Trail for an overnight stay at Karanga Camp.
Continue to Barafu Camp, completing the South Circuit with panoramic summit views. Rest and prepare for summit day at Barafu Camp.
Embark on the challenging summit night ascent between Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. Experience the breathtaking sunrise at Stella Point before continuing to Uhuru Peak. Descend to Mweka Camp for overnight rest.
Descend to Mweka Park Gate to receive summit certificates. Trek through wet and muddy terrain, concluding at Mweka Village for a drive back to Moshi. Celebrate the accomplishment with a well-deserved hot shower, dinner, and rest at Bristol Cottage.
